One of my least favorite things in the whole world is traffic. Mostly because traffic without a big causal event (like an accident, or road work) has always been super confusion to me. It seems like there no traffic, then traffic for NO reason, then all of a sudden it’s gone. But the truth is, traffic is usually not due to one big event. It’s a bunch of little things that add up to one big bottleneck.
Your podcast process can be similar. Here’s how to prevent the bottleneck.

00:00:00.480 –> 00:00:02.850
Joe: Something that drives me.
00:00:02.940 –> 00:00:04.590
Absolutely crazy.
00:00:05.310 –> 00:00:06.780
Is traffic.
00:00:07.800 –> 00:00:09.510
I just don’t understand.
00:00:10.260 –> 00:00:13.050
Y most traffic happens.
00:00:13.560 –> 00:00:19.470
Sure if there’s an accident or even
construction something obstructing
00:00:19.470 –> 00:00:21.960
the road or one of the lanes.
00:00:22.440 –> 00:00:23.070
Yes.
00:00:23.340 –> 00:00:27.660
You’re going to have traffic
as cars need to adjust.
00:00:28.500 –> 00:00:30.720
But when I hate traffic.
00:00:31.650 –> 00:00:36.480
Seemingly out of nowhere that
seemingly dissipates out of nowhere.
00:00:37.050 –> 00:00:38.670
It really confuses me.
00:00:39.930 –> 00:00:45.840
Until I learned that it’s not really one
big thing that’s causing the traffic.
00:00:46.980 –> 00:00:48.750
It’s a lot of little things.
00:00:48.780 –> 00:00:50.820
Someone hits their brakes here.
00:00:51.120 –> 00:00:54.690
They didn’t start going as
quickly as they could have there.
00:00:55.200 –> 00:00:59.940
Someone tried to merge and
blocked a lane for a minute.
00:01:00.780 –> 00:01:05.010
All of these things that
could take a second or less
00:01:05.370 –> 00:01:07.290
add up the more cars you add.
00:01:08.310 –> 00:01:12.420
And I was thinking about
this as I was thinking about.
00:01:13.170 –> 00:01:15.270
Bottlenecks in podcasting.
00:01:15.720 –> 00:01:18.510
And that’s what I want to
talk to you about today.
00:01:23.136 –> 00:01:28.026
.Welcome to podcast workflows, where you
get daily tips to improve your process.
00:01:28.296 –> 00:01:31.326
Grow your show and maybe
even make some money.
00:01:32.076 –> 00:01:32.676
Each week.
00:01:32.706 –> 00:01:37.926
I also do a deep dive into the process of
the world’s most successful podcasters.
00:01:38.256 –> 00:01:43.266
And reveal their tools, processes,
and systems to help you simplify
00:01:43.326 –> 00:01:45.096
the production of your own show.
00:01:45.426 –> 00:01:47.646
And reclaim hours in your day.
00:01:48.336 –> 00:01:51.426
You can improve your own
podcast production process
00:01:51.636 –> 00:01:53.256
by seeing how the pros do it.
00:01:54.123 –> 00:01:56.133
Joe: I’m your host, Joe Casabona.
00:01:56.163 –> 00:01:58.353
And today I want to talk to you about.
00:01:58.863 –> 00:02:01.533
Bottlenecks in your podcast process.
00:02:02.223 –> 00:02:04.503
Specifically, I was thinking about.
00:02:05.163 –> 00:02:06.663
This podcast.
00:02:07.263 –> 00:02:11.733
I’m about two months into recording
and releasing a daily podcast.
00:02:12.363 –> 00:02:16.353
The week of Thanksgiving, not
withstanding because I did miss that week.
00:02:17.223 –> 00:02:20.703
And the goal was to get.
00:02:21.513 –> 00:02:26.313
Uh, months worth of episodes
recorded and scheduled.
00:02:27.063 –> 00:02:28.323
Before.
00:02:29.313 –> 00:02:31.113
I launched and that didn’t happen.
00:02:31.113 –> 00:02:34.563
I launched with about 15 or 20 episodes.
00:02:35.313 –> 00:02:39.213
But then the goal after
that was record 10 episodes.
00:02:40.323 –> 00:02:41.253
Every week.
00:02:42.153 –> 00:02:43.743
And then I could get really ahead.
00:02:44.313 –> 00:02:45.633
But I noticed something.
00:02:46.113 –> 00:02:49.083
If you’ve been listening to
this show, you’ll know that.
00:02:49.623 –> 00:02:53.913
I do four of these mini episodes.
00:02:54.513 –> 00:02:57.213
And one deep dive every week.
00:02:58.203 –> 00:03:00.963
And I’ve been editing
the deep dive myself.
00:03:01.233 –> 00:03:05.883
So that I can get a feel for the, let’s
say, artistic direction of the show.
00:03:06.963 –> 00:03:09.243
Except that episode.
00:03:09.663 –> 00:03:11.223
Was the bottleneck.
00:03:12.183 –> 00:03:14.253
And so I would record.
00:03:14.883 –> 00:03:18.243
Let’s say six of these mini episodes.
00:03:19.053 –> 00:03:22.683
But no matter what, I still
had to take time to record.
00:03:23.163 –> 00:03:23.973
And edit.
00:03:24.393 –> 00:03:25.713
The deeper dive.
00:03:26.673 –> 00:03:28.743
And that process just
wasn’t working for me.
00:03:29.583 –> 00:03:31.653
So, what does this have
to do with traffic?
00:03:32.133 –> 00:03:37.383
Well, I already have the script
for the deep dive written, right.
00:03:37.413 –> 00:03:38.943
Or I did for a while.
00:03:39.543 –> 00:03:43.143
And I thought I would
just need to read these.
00:03:43.773 –> 00:03:44.553
And then.
00:03:45.033 –> 00:03:45.933
Release them.
00:03:46.593 –> 00:03:48.813
But I wanted them to be better.
00:03:49.263 –> 00:03:51.633
So if I had audio.
00:03:52.113 –> 00:03:54.603
Of the podcast or talking
about their process.
00:03:54.993 –> 00:03:56.373
I’d want to insert that.
00:03:56.943 –> 00:04:02.763
I added music during, uh,
transitions or segment changes.
00:04:03.063 –> 00:04:06.783
I added sound effects to draw
attention to the takeaways.
00:04:07.893 –> 00:04:09.903
And all of these little things.
00:04:10.413 –> 00:04:13.113
Added up to those 20 minute episodes.
00:04:13.503 –> 00:04:17.463
Taking an hour or more to record and edit.
00:04:18.393 –> 00:04:21.963
Versus these mini episodes
where I can record.
00:04:22.533 –> 00:04:25.023
Four or five in an hour.
00:04:26.553 –> 00:04:31.803
And moving into December and beyond,
I’m changing it up a little bit.
00:04:32.553 –> 00:04:33.693
Looking at the.
00:04:34.353 –> 00:04:38.403
Lower than hoped statistics right now.
00:04:39.393 –> 00:04:43.263
I can already figure out
that the deeper dives.
00:04:43.623 –> 00:04:45.033
Are popular.
00:04:45.753 –> 00:04:47.463
And so I have a decision to make.
00:04:48.033 –> 00:04:52.533
Do I continue making this a daily podcast?
00:04:53.553 –> 00:04:59.493
Or do I switch it to a weekly podcast
and only do those deeper dives?
00:04:59.973 –> 00:05:05.643
Knowing that the time adjustment
for writing, recording, editing,
00:05:05.643 –> 00:05:07.083
and releasing new episodes.
00:05:07.623 –> 00:05:10.833
Will equal that a four or
five of these mini episodes.
00:05:12.543 –> 00:05:15.423
I think what I’m going to do for now is.
00:05:15.933 –> 00:05:21.813
Do these mini episodes and release
the deeper dives as I have them.
00:05:22.653 –> 00:05:27.333
So this will allow me to
record a bunch of episodes.
00:05:27.633 –> 00:05:32.973
And continue to do the daily podcast
because that’s really the experiment here.
00:05:33.363 –> 00:05:34.323
Does this.
00:05:34.803 –> 00:05:39.123
Daily podcast format work
for a solo podcaster.
00:05:41.223 –> 00:05:43.713
And then I’ll release the deep
dives as I have them, because
00:05:43.713 –> 00:05:44.973
I’m still going to be doing them.
00:05:44.973 –> 00:05:46.533
In fact, I’ve got big plans.
00:05:46.833 –> 00:05:50.703
For podcast workflows.com
moving into 2024.
00:05:51.783 –> 00:05:58.023
And so as you look at your
2024, And your podcast process.
00:05:58.533 –> 00:06:00.303
I’m going to challenge you.
00:06:01.053 –> 00:06:02.763
What are your bottlenecks?
00:06:03.753 –> 00:06:08.433
Or what are the little things that are
happening to create one big bottleneck?
00:06:09.183 –> 00:06:13.173
What’s the thing that’s causing
the traffic in your process.
00:06:14.103 –> 00:06:15.603
Once you figure that out.
00:06:15.963 –> 00:06:19.233
You’ll be able to alleviate the problem.
00:06:19.923 –> 00:06:25.503
And hopefully become a more consistent
and more successful, however success.
00:06:26.013 –> 00:06:27.723
Is defined by you.
00:06:28.533 –> 00:06:29.403
Podcaster.
00:06:30.004 –> 00:06:35.134

more content like it, as well as bonus
